Hanlon reveals how official handled injury-time penalty claim
Paul Hanlon, the visiting captain, claims that referee Grant Irvine pulled aside the captains of Hibs and Livingston to explain the injury-time VAR review that created so much confusion at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Saturday. Additionally, the seasoned defender says that as long as officials make the correct choice, he is willing to put up with protracted delays while incidents are investigated.
When the ball struck Hanlon in the arm during the five minutes of extra time added on for stoppages, he believed he had given up the most recent penalty. The center-half acknowledged that all he could do was “hope and pray” for a favourable ruling, and he disclosed that Irvine had raised the possibility that Livi striker Mo Sangara was offside prior to the alleged “foul.”
Hanlon remarked, “It was kind of a heart-in-mouth moment.” It’s difficult to predict what will happen when something hits my face—I’m not sure if it was the ball—but then the ball hits my hand, and I’m not sure where my hand is. However, since offside was awarded, let’s just move on and call it a successful offside trap!
It’s understandable that the lengthy wait for these decisions is a little annoying because you want to know. However, if they make the correct choice, they will have taken the necessary time to make it. You would prefer it to go a little faster, but as long as they make the correct choice, we can continue playing the game.
Yes, it can be quite nerve-wracking, particularly at that point in the game; it does add a little bit of anxiety. However, all you can do is hope and pray that the decision is in your favour.
“The referee pulled the two captains aside on the pitch and instructed him to go check them for a handball and offside. In the end, he produced an offside. Maybe we deserved that one because we’ve had our fair share of unfortunate experiences with VAR.
