Huddersfield Town have recently announced the signing of former Watford striker Rhys Healey for a fee of £2million, according to The Athletic.
It remains to be seen whether this will be good value for the club, given Healey’s history of inconsistent performance in front of goal.
Healey was a successful goalscorer in French football with Toulouse, but he has struggled in the Championship since joining Watford in August 2023.
The Terriers are in a relegation battle and desperately need some firepower up front if they’re to pull away from danger and secure their Championship status. Forking out £2million for Healey is a brave call, but the club will deem it money well spent if they pull away from the bottom three in the coming months.
Despite signing a two-year contract with Watford last summer, the club was pleased to let him leave this month for a cost of £2 million.
This is excellent business given that they signed the player for free in the summer, and Watford’s management should be seeking to reinvest in fresh recruits this month given their league position just outside the play-offs.
The striker netted just twice in 14 appearances for Watford, so it made sense from their point of view to let him leave the club this month. Despite his poor return at Vicarage Road, Huddersfield and Darren Moore have obviously seen something they like to fork out a fee of £2million for the player.
This is a move that could go one of two ways. If Healey starts scoring and keeps the club up, it’s money well spent. If he flops in front of goal, it’ll be a disastrous move and a complete waste of money.
It’s a risk for the Terriers’ board, but Healey showed at Toulouse that he can be prolific in front of goal. He netted 39 times in 77 games for Toulouse and became a real fan favourite. Moore will be hoping that Huddersfield get that version of him, rather than the version they saw at Watford
The rest of the season for Huddersfield Town
The Terriers are now slightly outside the relegation zone, but Sheffield Wednesday is closing in. This implies that Darren Moore’s team will need to start winning games to get out of the relegation zone.
The club has only won twice since October 21st, which is why they are in danger; however, several of those results have been draws, which has helped to keep them going and their heads above water.
Spending £2 million on Healey is a clear statement of purpose, demonstrating to their relegation opponents that they are willing to spend money this month.
The signing of Healey is a gamble, but if he keeps the team going, then he’d be worth every penny.
