Darren Moore targets reunion with ‘wonderful’ Sheffield Wednesday star

Darren Moore could look to sign an attacker who rejected a new deal at Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer in November 2021, having spent a brief period on trial.

Before his deal with the Owls expired the following summer, the winger scored two goals and provided three assists in 19 games.

When Darren Moore was still at Hillsborough, he expressed his admiration for the Guatemalan international by telling The Star, “He needs that consistency.”

“I had no qualms about him joining us the moment I got to know him this season and saw him in training.

“I thought he would give us a wonderful out, and now we see someone who is happy and content, playing with a smile on his face, having made himself at home.”

It was fantastic to see him add a point to the scoreboard. He plays football for a team that plays to his strengths.

It’s fantastic for him that they’re all eager to feel the back of the net. I’m happy that his admirers have witnessed such a strong, well-performed display of his abilities.

“He’ll get stronger as the games progress.”

Mendez-Laing turned down Darren Moore’s offer to sign a new contract after the team was unable to advance to the Championship; instead, he chose to join Derby County.

In the Rams’ last 10 games in the third division, the 31-year-old has been a goal and assist machine in League One.

Due to Mendez-Laing’s recent form, Darren Moore’s Huddersfield are reportedly being watched by Hull City and Birmingham City as well, according to BBC journalist Alex Howell.

Mendez-Laing’s contract expires in the summer of 2020, so he might be able to sign a new deal for free or find another one for less money next month.

With Huddersfield moving in January, Mendez-Laing might face off against his old team for a spot in the Championship. The Terriers are now nine points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday in the table, sitting in 21st place.

This season, would Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have benefited Sheffield Wednesday?
Although Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is having a fantastic season in League One, it has been a while since he reached those levels in the Championship.

Before moving to Pride Park, the winger hadn’t scored more than three goals in the league since the 2017–18 campaign. He had 13 goals in 95 Championship games overall.

For one season in the second division, Mendez-Laing might have been a reliable member of the team, but he undoubtedly wouldn’t be the star player the Owls need to maintain their league standing.
