Huddersfield Town announce contract extension as defender heads out on loan

Centre-back Loick Ayina will spend the rest of the season loan at Scottish Premiership side Ross County

Huddersfield Town defender Loick Ayina has joined Scottish Premiership side Ross County on loan until the end of the season. The move is the centre-back’s third spell out on loan since joining the Terriers, having previously been with Boston United in 2021, while he also spent the second half of last season with Dundee United, another Scottish Premiership outfit.

Ayina is Town’s second young player to go out on loan this window, after Josh Austerfield joined Crewe Alexandra last week. The club have also confirmed that they have taken up the option year on Ayina’s contract, extending his deal until next summer.

Town’s sporting director Mark Cartwright stated on the team website, “Loick has real potential and has shown that already, but to truly learn his trade he needs to be playing consistently, and that’s unlikely to happen for him here at present with the other options we have available to us in the same position.”

“These can be the ideal setting for a player on the verge of joining our first team to obtain the required experience before coming back to us prepared to perform at that level, as we have recently witnessed with Brodie Spencer. Loick is aware of this difficulty.

“We believe he is a player who can develop and improve, so we are taking advantage of his contract option for an additional season. We are excited to watch how he performs with Ross County at a pivotal point in their season. His objective this season is to capitalise on his success from last season in Scotland.
