Danny Cowley will take charge of his first home match as Colchester United boss this weekend
Former Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley has made a return to management with League Two outfit Colchester United. The ex-Terriers manager was appointed as the Essex club’s new head coach on Thursday.
He oversaw his first game in charge at Swindon Town on Saturday, where his side netted a last-gasp equaliser to claim a 2-2 draw. Cowley spent just over 10 months in charge of the Terriers between September 2019 and July 2020, where he all but ensured the club’s Championship survival before being sacked prior to the final game of the campaign. He then went on to manage Portsmouth between March 2021 and January 2023, before also being dismissed.
After taking a year off from the game with his brother and longtime assistant Nicky, the 45-year-old is back in the dugout. The two chose to return to the county where they first found success as managers, having managed non-league teams Concord Rangers and Braintree Town before moving on to Lincoln City and then Town.
Cowley stated on his new team’s website after being appointed, “We feel very fortunate to be here. It’s a privilege to be here.” Naturally, Nicky and I are natives; having grown up nearby, we are aware of the significance the football team has for both the town of Colchester and its residents.
We have a great deal of history with Essex, having enjoyed some success there in the past. Speaking with Robbie Cowling, the chairman, I believe that it became clear very early on how much the club meant to him and how much he loved it.
“I believe that Nicky and I were searching for that alignment in order to try and find the right people, as we have been fortunate enough to manage several clubs over the last 15 years.”
“When I look at this opportunity, I see a football team with a tonne of positive attributes, including a fantastic infrastructure and an exceptionally talented roster.
“I believe that’s what Nicky and I were truly searching for in our next role, and the challenge now, I believe, is for everyone to get the last bit, which is to get it right on the pitch.”
When Bradford City visits the JobServe Community Stadium on Saturday, the Cowley brothers will be in charge of their first home game.
