Tony Smith hits back at Richie Myler over his approach to recruitment at Hull FC

Smith was relieved of his duties at Hull FC after a poor run of form saw the side concede 50 points in three out of four games and ever since the club have been led by interim head coach Simon Grix. They have confirmed that John Cartwright will take charge from next season on a three-year deal and that hasn’t been the only off-field appointment.

In the aftermath of Smith’s dismissal the club appointed Richie Myler as Director of Rugby and under the former Leeds Rhinos player, who Smith coached at one point, the club have set about an aggressive recruitment policy as they aim to turn their fortunes around.

Tom Briscoe, Jed Cartwright, Yusuf Aydin, and John Asiata are among the confirmed additions to that squad for the upcoming campaign. Additionally, rumors have it that Amir Bourouh, Ollie Holmes, and Zak Hardaker will be signed.

Their former manager has now questioned such a significant investment in his analysis prior to the team’s victory over Leeds Rhinos on Saturday.

Except for Bourouh, a number of the players Hull FC has been linked to are older players, and Tony Smith has said that this is a sign that the team hasn’t done enough to support their academy. This is despite the fact that the team has been working to re-sign a number of their talented young players, such as Harvey Barron, Logan Moy, Nick Staveley, Lewis Martin, and most recently, Jack Charles.

Smith asserted on Sky Sports: “Obviously, naturally.” Everything is connected. You are aware that’s exactly what you do in the club, especially when it comes to your younger stuff.

“By junior stuff, I mean that in order to know which way to go, you have to be connected to the coaches of your junior team and understand what’s coming through the academy.”

In what appears to be a jab at his former staff, former Hull FC manager Tony Smith questioned the club’s hiring practices under Richie Myler.

Hull FC fired Smith following a dismal run of play that saw the team give up 50 points in three of their last four games. Simon Grix has been the club’s acting head coach ever then. It has been reported that John Cartwright, who has a three-year contract, will take over as manager starting next season. However, this is not the only off-field appointment.

In addition to Nu Brown and Tex Hoy being released and Jake Clifford departing within a year, the club has just signed Franklin Pele and Jayden Okunbor on a loan basis. Fans of Hull FC should be hoping that Richie Myler’s upcoming group of players performs better.
