Hull KR boss Willie Peters Shield prospects as he outlines area for improvement

Having managed to avoid the first half of last Saturday’s Challenge Cup final, temptation got the better of Hull KR boss Willie Peters.

The Australian led the Robins out at Wembley in 2023, only to suffer the crushing disappointment of a golden-point loss to Leigh Leopards.

Rovers were 80 minutes away from a return to the national stadium when they ran into eventual winners Wigan Warriors in Doncaster.

KR responded favorably, defeating Leigh and the London Broncos in back-to-back games to move Peters’ team up to third place in the Super League midway through the season.

While he accepts that serial winners Wigan and St Helens will take some budging, Peters has the ambition to chase the League Leaders’ Shield after missing out on the cup.

It’s the ultimate aim, he declared.

“There is still more work to be done, but we are in a position to accomplish that. We’ll put ourselves in a position to do that in the end if we continually play with the same tenacity and mentality that we demonstrated against Leigh and meet the weekly KPIs.

“Wigan and St Helens are currently the teams above us; you can see how well they’re playing and how far they can go, but we need to narrow our focus to just ourselves.”

“Of course, you want to pursue any prize, and now that the Challenge Cup is gone, there are two trophies to be earned. If we set our minds to it, we are in a position to accomplish both. I say ‘accomplish both’ because there are still two trophies to be won, so let’s pursue those.”

Rovers have won seven of their last nine Super League games; their only losses have come away from home against Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons, two of their top six opponents.

Prior to the two-week break, Leigh visited Craven Park, where the Robins held a team to 0 for the third time this season after winning decisively at London to bounce back from their cup loss to Wigan.

Peters believes that KR’s 12-0 victory over the Leopards sets a standard for performance in the team’s attempt to catch up to Wigan and Saints.”The big one is consistency – and it’s consistency around our defense,” Peters said in response to a question on what Rovers must work on in the second half of the season.

“Although I’ve said it before, it’s about ensuring that our defense, in particular, is not far between our best and worst.
