Hull KR coach Willie Peters admitted his side were not at their best but was happy to pick up a narrow 13-12 victory over Castleford. Both sides started poorly but Sam Wood struck first to put Castleford ahead, but Hull KR responded with two tries in three minutes thanks to efforts from Tom Opacic and Elliot Minchella which put them in front at the break.
Unlike Rovers, they continued to make errors in the second period and Mikey Lewis’ missed penalty in front of the posts gave Castleford the belief they could get something from the match.
Rowan Milnes dived over to bring the scores level, but Hull KR snatched the points four minutes from time thanks to Jez Litten’s drop-goal to earn them a fourth consecutive win and move level on points at the top of Super League. Peters admitted his side made too many errors in their victory but found a way to win.
Peters stated: “We were aware that it would be a difficult physical battle, but we were pleased with the outcome even though we weren’t pleased with the performance. They were ready for it, and you don’t win that game if we weren’t a good team. We knew it was going to be a difficult game, but they were ready for it with the crowd and fresh off almost defeating Wigan the previous week.
“We won that game with our defense; we suffocated them a little bit, got some field position, and then hit the drop goal. Some players made mistakes that snowballed.”
As his team challenges the leaders, Peters is not getting too carried away because he is aware that the season has plenty of time left.
“There is a long way to go, but the feel good for us tonight will be looking at the table more so than what that game was,” he continued. Although we are in a solid position heading into the international break, we still need to improve on our performance.”Castleford is unquestionably a different team now than they were at the beginning of the season, and they could have won that game with ease.”
