Hull KR’s first team secured another impressive victory last week as they defeated Huddersfield Giants. But it wasn’t the club’s most eye-catching victory.
Beyond Super League matters, one of Hull KR’s lower-grade teams is making quite the impression, and they secured a statement victory on Wednesday. The club’s scholarship team beat Wigan Warriors 32-26 at Golborne Parkside to continue their excellent start to the season.
The Under 16’s team, coached by Matty Wilson, has now won all five of their games this season. They started with a victory over Huddersfield Giants and have gone on to defeat St Helens, Bradford Bulls, and Warrington Wolves, as well as the Warriors.
It is, of course, very promising news for the Robins. There is an internal acceptance that the club has not produced enough homegrown talent over the years, which has eventually had an adverse effect at first-grade level.
However, it currently seems like the Robins have one of the top under-16 teams in the nation, and it is hoped that in the years to come, they will establish themselves as the core of the first team. Since joining the club, Willie Peters has made it clear on multiple times that this is something that is really important.
It’s no secret that the three most successful Super League teams—Leeds Rhinos, St. Helens, and Wigan Warriors—have developed more players than any other. The scholarship results will undoubtedly inspire hope that the Robins will have a wealth of homegrown players in the coming years, since it’s an area they are eager to develop in.
Of course, the most notable current product of their system is Mikey Lewis, the halfback who is regarded as one of the league’s best players. In addition, recent performances by players like Connor Barley, Leo Tennison, and Louix Gorman have demonstrated their promise.
