Man charged with first-degree murder after stabbing woman to death

A 38-year-old lady was fatally stabbed in December 2020 in Hunterdon County, and now a guy from Sussex County is accused of her murder.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office reported that earlier this week, a grand jury in Hunterdon County indicted Brandon E. Petersen, 31, of Newton for the first-degree murder of Michele M. Carkhuff and two other related offenses.
Two daughters survive Carkhuff, who lived in Newton as well. At the time of her death, they were 20 and 6 years old.


At 9:13 p.m. on December 6, Delaware Township police responded to a report of a stabbing victim. Before they arrived, the victim’s companions had driven her to a nearby hospital in Mercer County, where she “succumbed to her injuries.” according to prosecutor’s office.

The Delaware Township Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office conducted a cooperative investigation that resulted in Petersen’s arrest the next morning in Pennsylvania.

In 2005, when he was fifteen years old, he was involved in a robbery that resulted in the repeated stabbing of a neighbor. For this offense, he was previously sentenced to thirteen years in jail in 2008.

The New Jersey Department of Corrections’ communications director, Liz Velez, stated that Petersen was released from Southern State Correctional Facility on August 21, 2019.
