New York — In the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, No. 5 UConn defeated Indiana 77-57 thanks to 23 points and 11 rebounds from Tristen Newton. The Huskies gained a significant lead in the second half of the game.

The Huskies (4-0) won by an average of 39 points in their first three games, and Newton—who also had six assists—was a big part of their fourth double-digit victory.

Newton hit 7 of 16 shots, five days after Mississippi Valley restricted him to 10 points. He fell two rebounds short of his career best.

In their first encounter with Indiana since 2019, the reigning national champions led 33:21 in the conclusion thanks to 18 points from Cam Spencer. Donavan Clingan pulled down nine rebounds and Alex Karaban scored thirteen points as the Huskies outrebounded Indiana 44–22 while shooting 44.6%.

With 18 points, Malik Reneau led the Hoosiers (3-1). Despite fouling out with seven minutes remaining, he scored fifteen points in the first half to help Indiana stay within striking distance.

Reneau was not very helpful. Indiana shot 37.8%, limiting leading scorer Kel’el Ware to 11 points on 2 of 10 shots.
