During his tenure in the black and gold, Petras was among the Hawkeyes who received the most criticism. His leadership and presence in the locker room have always been praised, in part because of the offensive’s maddening nature.
Before making his lone career start, Iowa quarterback Joe Labas remarked, “He’s like a third coach out there, another quarterback coach.” He has been a big assistance to me and always chats to me throughout plays, which is something I really need. I sincerely appreciate him helping me out; he’s been fantastic. Obviously, he is highly knowledgeable about the offense, so just seeking his opinion.”
Petras has served as a student assistant following a catastrophic injury she suffered during this past season versus Nebraska. He has been interacting with the quarterbacks and supporting the offensive line. Because of the COVID year, Petras is still eligible for one more year. Petras chose to stay in Iowa City for another season even though he wasn’t playing in order to support the club.
Wide receiver Nico Ragaini of Iowa previously stated, “I think it’s very cool of him to attack everything head-on.” “Leaving Iowa City is one thing, but the fact that he’s just stepping in to support our team while he’s injured as quarterback and can’t play QB here is quite another. To be honest, I find it to be quite inspiring how I feel about him.”
Petras has a big arm and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the California native return to the west coast and get one more year of starting football experience.
Regardless, the college football transfer portal is expected to be as active as ever this offseason. This is the first cycle with transfer portal windows, which stretch from Dec. 4 to January 3 for the FBS with another period from May 1-15.
