Sophomore forward has been nominated to the award for the best small forward in college basketball

AMESBURY, Mass. – Mark Mitchell, a sophomore at Duke, has been named as one of the 20 watch list contenders for the 2024 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Entitled in remembrance of Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year NBA player Julius Erving, the yearly award, now in its ninth year, honours the best small forwards in Division I football. The watch list of 20 prospects was selected by a national group comprised of elite college basketball specialists.

Mitchell, who started in every one of his 35 games as a freshman, is one of four players from Duke’s 2022–23 squad that are returning. Mitchell, a versatile player on the Duke squad, placed in the 94th percentile as an on-ball defender as a freshman, which helped the Blue Devils become one of the nation’s top defensive teams last season. In order to average 9.1 points per game and shoot 114-243 (.469) from the field, he recorded 16 double-figure scoring outings. He also pulled down 4.5 rebounds per game. At the team’s annual banquet, Mitchell received the Pagliuca Family Coach’s Award, which is given to the player who most embodies Duke Basketball’s devotion and principles.

Fans of college basketball are invited to take part in the Dell Technologies Fan Voting throughout each of the three rounds. The 20 players on the watch list for the Erving Award will be reduced to 10 by the end of January. Five candidates will be submitted to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame selection committee by the end of February. Together with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five, the prize winner will be awarded at a later date.
