A2 closed after serious crash shuts road in both directions

Long delays are being caused by the closure of the A2 in both directions.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Halfpence Lane (Cobham / Shorne / Inn On The Lake, Cobham) and A227 Wrotham Road (Gravesend / Tollgate Services, Gravesend).

Air ambulance at scene of ‘serious’ collision

National Highways says emergency services are in attendance, including the air ambulance, following the collision, which it has described as “serious”.

Delays on and around A2

The traffic monitoring system Inrix reported in its most recent update that A2 was closed in both directions. There are delays from the A227 Wrotham Road (Gravesend/Tollgate Services, Gravesend) to Halfpence Lane (Cobham/Shorne/Inn On The Lake, Cobham) due to a serious accident involving a van and a lorry.

“Heavy traffic to eastbound Bean and westbound M2 J2.” There are more delays in the construction of roads near Higham, Gravesend, and Greenhithe.

“There is an air ambulance at scene.”

Diversion routes westbound

National Highways have advised driver travelling westbound to follow the Solid Square diversion symbol on road signs:

• Leave the M2 at J1 and join the A289 heading east.
• Follow the A289 for one junction and take the slip to the roundabout with the A226.
• Continue on the A226 to the Lion Roundabout with the B261 and take the 1st exit onto the B261.
• Follow the B261 to the junction with Valley Drive and turn left onto Valley Drive.
• Proceed on Valley Drive to the roundabout with Hever Court Road and take the 2nd exit onto Hever Court Road.
• At the next roundabout take the 1st exit onto Henhurst Road.
• At the roundabout with the A2 take the 3rd exit to rejoin the A2 westbound and continue your journey.

Diversion routes eastbound

Drivers travelling eastbound have been advised by National Highways to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs

• Exit the A2 At Marling Cross into the east bound lane of Heaver Court Road via a roundabout at the top of the exit slip. From here it continues a short distance to the junction with Valley Drive.
• At the junction diverted traffic will turn into Valley Drive and travel Northwards towards the junction with the B261 Old Road East.
• At this junction it will turn east onto the B261 and travel towards The Lion roundabout.
• The Lion roundabout forms a junction with the A226 where diverted traffic will continue on the A226 eastbound towards Rochester and the junction with the A289.
• At this junction motorway traffic will be diverted onto the A289 towards the M2.

Congestion to M2

Delays in accident investigation work will now extend from Halfpence Lane (Cobham / Shorne / Inn On The Lake, Cobham) to A227 Wrotham Road (Gravesend / Tollgate Services, Gravesend). Additionally, there is currently traffic at M2 junction 2 westbound and Bean eastbound.

There are more delays in the construction of roads near Higham, Gravesend, and Greenhithe.
