Kent road crash as driver charged for killing man,21 in collision

For the first time, a driver accused of killing a young father by reckless driving has appeared in court.

When a red Volkswagen Polo struck a wall on Hamilton Road in Deal in October 2022, passenger Owen Tagg, 21, perished in the collision.

Following the collision almost two years ago, driver Jack Nixon, 25, showed up in court yesterday for his initial hearing at Folkestone Magistrates Court.

Crown court has now been given the case.

Victori Aked, prosecuting, told the court: “The car collided with a brick wall. Owen Tagg was pronounced dead. “This is the first time the matter has come into the court system.”

Nixon, of Cannon Street, Deal, was released on bond by Judge William Nelson during the brief hearing, and the case was postponed until August 19 at Canterbury Crown Court.

“This is too serious to be dealt with in this court,” he informed Nixon.

Nixon is charged with five counts related to the crash and one related to an unrelated incident; he has not yet entered a plea.

Firstly, exceeding the legal limit on alcohol consumption and driving while intoxicated, resulting in death. According to the charge sheet, his blood contained between 87 and 191 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres. Eighty is the upper limit.

In addition, he is charged with causing the death by driving without the required licence and insurance.

He only held a provisional licence, the court was informed.

Mr. Tagg was a passenger in the backseat, and there had been injuries to other people.

Nixon is accused of causing serious injuries to Natalie Hubbard and Morgan Peay by driving carelessly in the third and fourth charges.

The fifth is that he drove while under the influence of drugs, failing to drive with the necessary caution and attention, and causing death. It was reported to the court that he had consumed cannabis.

On the same day, Nixon was also charged with a sixth count of reckless driving in Canterbury’s Watling Street.

After his passing, Mr. Tagg of Aylesham received tributes.

“Never thought in a million years I’d be writing this,” his girlfriend Emy May wrote. Today, another angel was taken by Heaven. You truly were my soul mate.

“I sincerely hope you’re at peace, keeping watch over all of us.

“My current state of pain is indescribable.

“I’m waiting for your big smile to come beaming through the door. What I would do to spend one last moment with you. Rest well, my angel; my time with you won’t be far off. I will always and forever love you.”

Shelbea Deary posted on Facebook, saying, “It’s difficult for me to understand.” I will really miss you, Owen Tagg. I adore you, buddy. Peace be with you.”

Anthony King also posted on the social media platform, saying, “I’m in complete shock to be reading this awful news.”

“Owen was such a nice young man he was my apprentice for a short time. I had nothing but admiration for him. “My condolences go out to his friends and family especially to that of his girlfriend knowing they had a young child.”
