Kilmarnock skipper hails fighting display*

The Rugby Park team defeated St Mirren 5-2 over the weekend thanks to an incredible second half display.

Kyle Vassell believes his team is ready for a run at winning European football the next season because they can count on Cafu and Luis Figo to perform well.
At Rugby Park on Saturday, Kilmarnock produced an almost unbelievable comeback, defeating St Mirren and moving up to fourth place in the Premiership standings in just eighteen minutes.

Despite a subpar first half, Stephen Robinson’s team took a well-earned lead thanks to goals from Mikael Mandron and Charles Dunne, both of whom came off deliveries by Greg Kiltie.
However, the captain started the insanity by narrowing the deficit.

The game had barely got back underway when Marley Watkins’ nodded the home side in front before Vassell made it a double with an emphatic finish after racing onto a ball over the top.

David Watson produced a mazy run from inside his own half before rolling the ball beyond Zach Hemmings to complete the rout.

And the captain says watching the Prestwick youngster’s display as a makeshift right-back was just like watching Brazil.

He said: “What I can say is that we’ve put down a huge marker. We’ve had a game like this coming all season, one where it all came together the way it did in the second half.

“The back four started making all the right calls. “Liam Donnelly and Liam Polworth in the middle of the park are just so good, the way they look after the ball.

“When it all came together, everyone out there was 8s, 9 and 10s. You look at Davie’s goal; he’s like Cafu the way he dribbled through them.

“Danny was brave at the penalty – and when the ball comes to Matty, it’s like watching Luis Figo. Me? I would be Les Ferdinand – I wish!”

He added: “At half-time the gaffer told us to pull our fingers out, not to let this chance pass us by.

“He reminded us where we’ve been these past couple of seasons – relegated, promoted, fighting relegation again – and that now we had a massive chance to get so close to clinching top six.

“I got that one back it felt like something was on and when Danny put away the penalty so soon afterwards, it was such a big moment.

“He was so brave taking it in those circumstances and as soon as he put it away we knew we were going to win.”

Despite the win, and their lofty place in the table, the 31-year-old says he’s not thinking too far ahead, commeting: “Once we secure top six, we’ll start looking forward, with Europe the aim.
