Permission to open a church in Kilmarnock with the purpose of “liberating men from the oppression of the devil” has been granted.
East Ayrshire Council planners approved Winners Chapel’s plans to convert offices at 16 College Wynd in the town centre.
Nelson Ekonye, the applicant for the proposals to turn the office space into a place of worship, is the branch leader of the Living Faith Church in Glasgow.
According to the church’s website, gambling and faith are highly valued.
A portion of the text states: “Our people work to release people from the devil’s grasp throughout Europe and beyond. They preach the gospel and make money in online casinos. Playzee bingo players can get blessed at Winners Chapel International Glasgow, a sizable branch of the global Living Faith Church. We are teaching those with spiritual depth and awareness, including those who enjoy playing online casinos.”
“The application site is within the Kilmarnock town centre and the John Finnie Street and Bank Street Conservation Area,” the planners said after approving the application. Since no external alterations are suggested, it is believed that the planned change of use would not have a negative effect on the Conservation Area’s architectural or historic character.
“Furthermore, the proposed change of use will contribute positively to the character and amenity of the town centre and the Conservation Area by increasing their vitality by ensuring the continued occupation of the existing unit and by generating a degree of footfall within the area.”
