Kilmarnock man serving 13 years for sex abuse charges is….

Appearing at Paisley Sheriff Court this week 60-year-old Brian Newman was found guilty of sexually abusing boys at another care home – Burnside Children’s Home in Irvine – in the 1980s and 1990s.

A Kilmarnock man jailed for historic sex abuse charges has been given another eight years for similar offences.

Brian Newman was jailed last year for abusing six youngsters at an Ayrshire children’s home in the 1990s.

The Jimmy Savile affair, which resulted in his 13-year prison sentence, prompted his victims to come forward. Following his punishment, additional young people came forward.

The 60-year-old was found guilty of sexually abusing boys at another care home, Burnside Children’s Home in Irvine, in the 1980s and 1990s. He appeared in Paisley Sheriff Court this week.

He was also found guilty of assaulting another child at the home he shared with his wife and kids in Kilmarnock.

Court heard how the beast targeted his first victim between November 1989 and March 1993 – when the victim was aged between 10 and 13.

Between December 1988 to December 1990, he targeted another young lad, aged 13 to 15.

The first victim, who is now 36 and has his own family, sobbed as he told a jury about the torture he had at the hands of Newman, who was supposed to be caring for him.
The audacious pervert abused his second victim in his house, which he shared with his wife and children.

But cruel Newman argued he had done nothing wrong, and that he had done everything he could for the youngsters.

Giving evidence in his own defence, Newman stated, “I wanted to make their experience as enjoyable as possible.

“I treated them in a way as if they lived in a normal family setting.”

Newman, a caretaker at the children’s home, felt he was good at his work and told prosecutor Jennifer Thomson that he thought his victims had made up allegations about him for money.

He said, “I saw an article lately that suggested Britain is evolving into a compensation society

people are saying, ‘I tripped over a step’, just to get easy cash.

“I can only assume they’ve jumped on the bandwagon and are doing that – I can’t come to any other conclusion.

“I can put my hand on my heart and say I’m an innocent man

However, a jury of five men and ten women rejected his lies in less than three hours, convicting him of abusing the two youngsters.

Sheriff Tom McCartney left the bench for nearly an hour to decide how to deal with Newman after learning he had already served 13 years in prison for identical acts.

When he returned, he stated: “This was serious sexual abuse of vulnerable children.” The offending activity was repeated and sustained throughout time.

“The opportunity to commit the abuse derived from your position as a member of staff at the children’s home, where you were responsible for these children; a more serious violation of trust is impossible to imagine.

“The victims bravely gave evidence and I had the opportunity to witness the serious lasting impact of the abuse on them.”

He stated that the 13-year sentence Newman is currently serving for acts that occurred after the ones he was convicted of on Thursday were “a continuation and an escalation of offending which started at Burnside.”
