Kilmarnock shop gives to customers and car owners directive on parking’

Barriers have been erected ahead of the car park being switched to being privately controlled.

But the flagship store’s opening comes with a hefty concession in the form of 80 car park spaces just for its customers.

Barriers have already been erected at the Queen Street (South) in preparation for the move that will see one of the town’s biggest car parks switch to being privately controlled.

East Ayrshire Council has confirmed that they have leased the land to Designer Rooms and that the car park will only be for their customers.

And shoppers don’t have long left to make use of the car park – and Electric vehicle charging points – with the barrier being put to use from March 1 in preparation for the new store’s summer opening.

On Sturrock Street, the council built a parking lot, and there is presently construction off London Road near to Centrestage to increase the amount of space available for cars.

Development plans are underway for Grange Street and the site of the multi-story building upon its demolition.

East Ayrshire Council said in a statement: “With the great news that The Designer Rooms is moving to Fowlds Street in Kilmarnock, the Ayrshire Roads Alliance wants to let local people and visitors to Kilmarnock know that the car park outside the existing Poundstretchers store will still be open for public use until March 1.

“After that date, the parking lot will be turned over to The Designer Rooms, who will run it and provide 80 spots for shoppers when the store opens in the summer. There will also be charging stations for electric cars.

“The smaller parking lots here as well as the Marks and Spencer parking lot will continue to be owned and operated by Ayrshire Roads Alliance.

Additionally, Sturrock Street now has more parking spots, and construction is underway to build a new parking lot on London Road close to CenterStage. Pre-construction plans have been produced for additional parking at Grange Street, and after the multi-story parking structure is removed, new spots will be built there as well.”

The largest Designer Rooms in Scotland are set to open, as of last week.

In addition to closing the Irvine location, management intend to move from Campbell Street in the town.

Executives at Designer Rooms claim that the store will “truly revolutionise this side of Kilmarnock town centre”.

They also stated: “The Designer Rooms would especially like to thank East Ayrshire Council for their support in helping to facilitate this new project, which will have a positive impact on this end of Kilmarnock town centre.”

“This is fantastic news for Kilmarnock,” said Douglas Reid, the leader of the East Ayrshire Council. The growth and success of local businesses is truly encouraging, and we are thrilled that The Designer Rooms has chosen to remain in East Ayrshire. This larger location, which has designated parking, will greatly enhance the shop options in this area of the town centre and support our goal of developing a bustling town centre.
