A large emergency response descended on Stewarton in the early hours of this morning.

A man and a woman have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out at flats in Stewarton the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services shut down Dunlop Street in the town shortly after midnight today.

The pair were rushed to Crosshouse Hospital after the top floor blaze erupted with neighbouring properties forced to evacuate.

An eye-witness at the scene spotted four fire engines, two ambulances, a pair of rapid response paramedics and a heavy police presence early this morning.

Officials have not disclosed the condition of the man and woman involved in the fire.

More than 12 hours after the fire broke out, police and specialist fire investigators remain at the scene.

One police van has been spotted on Dunlop Street along with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service van from the fire investigation unit.

The ferocity of the blaze could be seen today with a melted window frame at the property involved and black charring on nearby brickwork.

Since then, locals have been permitted to go back to their houses.

According to police, the inquiry into the fire’s cause is still ongoing.

A spokesman for Police Scotland stated: “On Sunday, February 4, just after midnight, police were alerted to a complaint of a fire in flats on Dunlop Street, Stewarton.

“An ambulance sent a man and a lady to Kilmarnock’s Crosshouse Hospital for medical attention.

The fire has been put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Although occupants were evacuated from the building out of caution, they have already returned.

“Officers remain at the scene and enquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing.”
