Major Kings Lynn road closure as drunk driver causes ghastly crash

A driver who was intoxicated and caused two accidents was banned from the road for three and a half years.

On Thursday, Jonathan Wheeldon, 31, of Gelham Manor in Dersingham, appeared in Lynn Magistrates’ Court and was given a sentence for exceeding the legal alcohol limit and operating a vehicle without a valid licence.

Wheeldon had previously acknowledged both offences.

Wheeldon was involved in an accident with another car on Wisbech Road in Walsoken on May 4, while operating a Renault Megan.

Wheeldon ran away from the scene, hitting a fence post on the way to a bar.

Asif Akram, the prosecutor, stated that Wheeldon’s car was damaged and he looked intoxicated when the landlord of that pub called the police.

A 44-home development was rejected by the council allegedly on “spurious grounds.”

When the police arrived, a breath test was performed, and the results showed that the officer had consumed 103 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. 35 milligrammes is the legal limit to drive.

Wheeldon’s record included 37 offences in all.

In her mitigation, Alison Muir stated that Wheeldon’s girlfriend keeps him on the “straight and narrow” and that his life has changed dramatically since his drunk driving incident.

Requiring mental health treatment will be beneficial. He promises to follow the directive, Ms. Muir stated.

Wheeldon was given a 24-month community order by the magistrates, which includes a six-month alcohol abstinence requirement and a 12-month mental health treatment requirement.

In addition to being banned from driving for 42 months, he was also ordered to pay £120 in fines, £114 in victim surcharges, and £40 in court costs.
