Heartbreaking as Rob Burrow’s final words revealed

Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow has urged people not to waste a moment of life in an inspiring final message, recorded before his tragic death.

The rugby league hero, who died after a four-and-a-half year battle with MND yesterday (June 2), shared the message during BBC documentary ‘There’s Only One Rob Burrow’.

It featured interviews with his former teammate and best friend Kevin Sinfield, his wife Lindsey Burrow and his parents Geoff and Irene Burrow, as well as Rob himself.

In the final moments of the programme, Rob said: “I am just a lad from Yorkshire who got to live out his dream of playing rugby league

“Having three small children of my own, I would never want any family to experience what my family and kids have gone through since my diagnosis.

“My final message to you is: whatever your personal battle, be brave and face it.

“Every single day is precious. Don’t waste a moment. In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.

“Rob Burrow, over and out.”

During the half-hour documentary, Rob also spoke about how his family had become “a beacon of hope for families in the same situation as us”.

He talked movingly about his best friend Kevin Sinfield, who he described as a “special human being”.

Rob has assisted Kevin in raising over £15 million for charitable causes. Of that amount, about £6 million has been used to construct a brand-new, cutting-edge MND center in Leeds.

In order to help his friend, Kevin has undertaken a number of tasks. One particularly difficult one from last Christmas was the “7 in 7 in 7” challenge, which required him to run an ultra-marathon every day for seven days in seven different cities. In 2023, he famously carried Rob to the finish line of the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon.

Kevin stated, “I just tried to do a bit of running for a mate,” throughout the documentary.

Afterwards, he said, “Leeds is both of our cities.” We discovered what we needed—something that would continue in Rob’s honor year after year. The Rob Burrow Marathon is a means for individuals to express their concern.

Rob and Kevin received a CBE from Prince William in the New Year’s Honours List in recognition of their extraordinary charitable contributions.Rob’s passing was revealed in a statement released by Leeds Rhinos yesterday, June 2. As documented in the YEP’s live blog, since then, a plethora of tributes have been given, with mourners assembling at Headingley Stadium to offer their condolences.

Rob’s wife Lindsey also spoke as part of the documentary. She described meeting him as a teenager, before they had three children.

At a very distressing point, Lindsey told her of a request Rob had made of her. “He always says, find somebody else, you’re still young,” the woman remarked. However, no one else will ever exist. Rob can never be replaced by anyone.

She remarked, “I know the legacy that Rob has left will stand the test of time, and there is so much to be proud of him for,” in reference to his role as a father. He is such a lucky father to them.
