Leeds United are on the hunt for at least one new full-back amid Luke Ayling’s impending departure to Middlesbrough, according to Graham Smyth.
The chief journalist wrote for Yorkshire Evening Post on Wednesday [10 January] that the Whites are “actively” searching for at least one full-back signing in the January transfer window.
With Daniel Farke’s depth in the right-back position cut from five to three, after the club ended Djed Spence’s season-long loan early and now Ayling leaving on loan, Leeds are a little short down the right-hand side.
Following the news of Ayling’s departure, Smyth wrote: “As for a replacement, there is nothing imminent but Leeds are actively on the hunt for at least one full-back in the January transfer window.”
Not enough choice
Farke has had a difficult time choosing his full-backs since arriving at Elland Road in the summer. Spence and Junior Firpo’s seasons have been blighted by injury, while Sam Byram has been deputised on the opposite flank to his natural right-back position.
Archie Gray has also been deputised in defence, being switched from his defensive midfield role, which has been a stroke of genius from the Leeds manager.
Leo Hjelde is a forgotten man at Elland Road, who is also a full-back. The Norwegian has made just one league appearance this season, being hooked at half-time in a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City in August.
Leeds are desperate for a new full-back that they can rely on, such as Burnley’s Connor Roberts, who has already been linked with a move to Elland Road, as per Darren Witcoop. They need a player with experience, a lack of spells on the sideline and the ability to play Farke’s attacking style of football.
So, not asking for much then? Leeds will need to be patient if they are to bring a player in before the end of the January transfer window. But that is not to say it will not happen for the Whites.
