Southampton is in desperate need of a win going into their encounter against Leeds United this weekend. After a strong start under Russell Martin, his team’s precipitous slide to 15th place in the Championship was caused by losses in four straight games.
The Saints have the worst defensive record in the division with 19 goals allowed in eight games. Their most recent game saw them fall to Middlesbrough, who had not previously experienced victory.
After a challenging few months, things seem to be coming together for Leeds United.
Since their first away game against Birmingham City, Daniel Farke and company haven’t dropped a league match. They now have six games without a loss and are in sixth place after their outstanding performance in their latest match against Watford, which they won 3-0.
Here are some of our writers’ predictions for the match.
Charles Ray
“Both of these teams have been predicted to compete for the top spots in the Championship this year, but the sentiments at the clubs are completely different going into this game. With Georgino Rutter among the standout players, Leeds are really getting going, while Southampton’s good start has turned into a losing streak.
“Despite the promise he showed there, Swansea City were a relatively inconsistent team under Martin’s leadership. With their current roster, the Saints ought to have high expectations. Given their objectives, you have to assume that any additional runs like this won’t be accepted, thus it’s up to him to break them out of this rut.
“I can see this level finishing despite the opposing forms.
Leeds has the skill to severely punish Southampton if they put on another sluggish performance. But I believe the hosts have stopped the rot here. I’ll wager on a draw at 2-2.
“Leeds currently appear a little erratic. But under Farke, they are unquestionably displaying some of their best skills, and the victories over Millwall and Watford bode well for the Whites.
Meanwhile, Southampton is at a loss. They seem to be lacking confidence, and this particular stage is really putting Martin to the test. I’m not sure how or if he’ll survive it.
Leeds is yet another challenging match for the Saints, and if they perform poorly, the home crowd can swiftly turn against them. I believe Farke’s team will win this one again since they are tough on the road.
