An ex-player of Leeds United, Jack Clarke, assisted Sunderland to a straightforward victory against Sheffield Wednesday on the road on Friday night, while Leeds United suffered a setback to Southampton in the Championship on Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Both Sunderland and Leeds United want to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League by finishing in the top two of the Championship table this year.
Sunderland has 16 points after nine games and is now fourth in the standings.
Ipswich Town is in second place, six points ahead of the Black Cats.
With just 13 points from nine games, Leeds is well behind in ninth place.
The team of Daniel Farke did not do well.
Sunderland defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 on Friday night in an away match.
Jack Clarke, a former winger for Leeds United, is thriving for Sunderland.

The winger scored his first goal in the eighth minute and his second goal came from a penalty on the 31st.
With seven goals from nine games, the 22-year-old is currently tied for the league’s leading scorer in the Championship.
At Sunderland, Clarke has developed into a goal machine.
The winger spent 2022 on loan with the Black Cats before making a permanent move to the Stadium of Light in 2022 after failing to make a significant impact at Tottenham Hotspur.
The English rookie scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in the Championship last year.
It does now appear highly possible that Clarke will easily top his goal total from the previous campaign.
In the summer of 2019, Leeds traded Clarke to Tottenham for $8.5 million (Sky Sports).
There, Clarke was 18 years old.
He has made significant development recently and is now a much better and more experienced player.
He is still only 22 years old.
Clarke is extremely talented.
Tony Mowbray, the manager of Sunderland, has been extremely pleased with Clarke’s development.
According to Mowbray, who was quoted by ChronicleLive, Clarke is a terrific footballer who is currently filled with optimism and confidence.
“When I reflect on Jack Clarke’s performance for Tottenham U23s against our young squad when I was manager of Blackburn Rovers two and a half years ago, I realize that something remarkable has occurred to him and that he is now playing with confidence and believe in himself.
He may be impossible to play against because you never know if he’ll run down the outside or cut inside to bend it in like he did for the opening goal.
