Karl Robinson, a former assistant coach for Leeds United, is currently the early 6/4 favorite to take over as Gillingham’s next manager in League Two.
After 20 months as manager at Priestfield, the fourth-tier team has parted ways with Neil Harris. Despite being 10 points outside of safety when Harris arrived in February 2022, Gillingham was relegated in his first season on goal differential.
They are currently tied for eighth place in the League Two standings with Swindon Town and Mansfield Town, who are in positions sixth and seventh, respectively, on points. The club, however, has declared that it “wants to go in a different direction” at this time.
Gillingham Football Club, which has had Neil Harris in charge at Priestfield for little over 20 months, has decided to break ways with him, according to a statement. Neil, who joined the organization in February 2022, came within one goal of preventing the squad from being relegated to League One on the final day of the season while making up a 10-point deficit.
The club has made the decision to move in a different direction and will start the search for a head coach to lead the team going ahead. The club will also lose David Livermore. In the interim, Keith Millen will assume temporary leadership of the first team with immediate effect. The team thanks Neil and David for their efforts over the last two seasons and wishes them the best of luck in the future.
The final four games of the 2022–23 season saw Robinson team up with Sam Allardyce at Leeds as the Whites were kicked out of the Premier League. Following the promotion of MK Dons to the Championship in 2016, Robinson received an offer for the Elland Road position.
Leeds only earned one point in Allardyce’s four games in charge, but Robinson has previously expressed his opinion that the former manager of Bolton, Newcastle, and Sunderland might have maintained the Whites in the Premier League with more time.Sam and I were devastated over being demoted, he said on the I Had Trials Once podcast. We all believed that we still had options. We gained some momentum following the Manchester City match when we lost by a score of only 2-1. This was especially true since they lost to Liverpool by five goals and Crystal Palace by five goals before we arrived.
“We played Newcastle, who are arguably at their best point in their history, and Manchester City, the best club team in the world. Then we played West Ham, who were advancing to the European Cup final, and our final match of the season was against Tottenham. For all the criticism they receive, if Harry Kane and Heung-min Son are on their game, they are capable of defeating any Premier League team.
The anxious energy that footballers carry and what it does to a human is so difficult to define, especially in football, which is why we were all over the place during the second half of the West Ham game. You seize at things and act too quickly, making the easiest opportunities turn into the most challenging ones.
These two extremes of the spectrum are equally challenging to handle because you’re attempting to help the management and your teammates while also being driven to succeed. This can be a major issue.
