Youngs volunteers at Leicester General Hospital

Ben Youngs, a prominent player for the Leicester Tigers, partnered with the Royal Voluntary Service last Friday, April 19, to support the national charity’s work with the NHS by visiting Leicester General Hospital.

As part of the hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration, Youngs was rolling the famous Hospital Trolley around the different wards and giving patients a variety of sweet goodies.

The volunteers’ motivation comes from their contacts with hospital patients, many of whom are happy to see a pleasant face and have a seat and conversation, rather than merely from the items on the trolley.

This is particularly valid for people who might not receive as many visits from friends and relatives on a regular basis.

Speaking on the day, Youngs remarked, “It’s been a lot of fun. Some folks need a chat, some just need a smile, and the tram helps get them in the room. It’s a beautiful example of people giving up their time to help others.

“It serves as a conduit to help you enter social situations, strike up conversations, demonstrate empathy, and assist others in need.
When asked about the 50th anniversary of the famous tram and the celebration of the Royal Voluntary Service, Youngs commended all of the volunteers who gave up their time over the previous 50 years and urged those who had participated to be proud of their voluntary work and the impact it has made.
