Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, and Stevenage will all be playing League One football next season.
While the Imps, the Tangerines, the Tykes and Boro all came up short in their respective bids for promotion, the Stags will be rising from League Two after winning automatic promotion alongside Stockport County and Wrexham.
Now, it is claimed all five sides have set their sights on out of contract striker Louis Appere.
The 25-year-old’s deal with Northampton Town expires this summer and while the Cobblers have confirmed the Scot has been offered fresh terms, they remain unsigned and he could move on for nothing.
Reporter Graeme Bailey states Town are set to lose him this summer, and all of Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, Barnsley and Stevenage are interested.
Appere notched six goals and two assists in 41 games this season, mainly acting as a backup. Overall, he’s notched 18 goals and 13 assists in 106 games for Northampton since joining from Dundee United in January 2022.
On the move?
Despite not having the most impressive goal total, Appere is a diligent attacker with solid physical traits who will always be useful in League One.
On a free transfer too, he could prove to be a shrewd signing for any of Lincoln City, Blackpool, Mansfield Town, Barnsley or Stevenage as they line up potential free transfer additions. Appere could be among the eye-catching bargains on the market this summer if he turns down this new deal offer.
Also, he’s a nice age at 25. He has the potential to be a very potent striker in League One if he can develop the confidence and goal-scoring instincts in front of goal that he has occasionally been found to lack.
In the end, he also has the ball in his court. He has two choices this summer: either he stays with the Cobblers or he tries his luck as a free agent and looks into his possibilities.
Northampton Town’s striker options
Jon Brady might be in charge of somewhat revamping Northampton Town’s striker department if Appere moves on as well.
Tyreece Simpson and Kieron Bowie’s loans are about to expire, and Danny Hylton is leaving after his contract is up. There won’t be any natural senior strikers on the Sixfields roster if Appere leaves.
They will therefore be hopeful that Appere may remain. Finding more strikers than that will be a serious problem for the team this summer, even though it can be difficult to locate one or two during the transfer season.
