“We decided to fight fire with fire against opposition

Views from Merthyr Imp after their 1-0 victory over Stevenage in League One on Saturday at Broadhall Way (respond here): “So, I arrived home a while ago, albeit an hour later than I would have if there hadn’t been a 12-minute delay. I haven’t yet looked at any match reports or seen this post, so here are my opinions.

A rough match, and aside from the penalty, I don’t recall either goalie needing to make a save. It looked to me that we were playing 4-4-2 with four midfield players, Moylan and Jefferies being the two outside of the four but neither really playing wide. It felt as though we had solved any wing-back problems by playing without any today. Not until Hamer took over

In my first live game of the season, Makama astonished me with her energetic appearance. Draper performed less well. It wasn’t a game for midfielders as we decided to fight fire with fire against this opposition and it was a solid defensive performance. Their best chance came when Jackson headed the ball up in the air in the first half and we rode our luck then. Darikwa looked the best of the new signings, and overall McKiernan did as well as Bayliss.

I don’t usually criticise referees (much) but I can’t believe this one referees every match like that. Fussy didn’t seem to be the half of it, and although he often seemed to give free kicks for very little at other times he seemed to allow play to go on despite apparently obvious fouls. It seemed a clear trip for the penalty, though, and nobody seemed to argue.

Couldn’t make out from the other end what happened with O’Connor’s second yellow card. It seemed at first as if it was just a free kick to us, then it almost looked as if he’d given a penalty to Stevenage (although there was no crowd reaction) then it turned out it was a free kick after all. So with them already a man down due to having used all their substitutes it just made it ten a side for the last few minutes.

Sum up as a great team performance.”
