Losing Shohei Ohtani would be unfortunate for the Los Angeles Angels, but there are ways they can still salvage their offseason.
Now that the Winter Meetings have officially begun, the Los Angeles Angels are in Nashville, hoping to catch as big of a fish as they can during their stay. They seem to be one of the front-runners for his services, though it’s unclear if that’s actually feasible.
Even though the Angels would like to re-sign Shohei Ohtani, his departure wouldn’t be catastrophic. If he does depart, the Angels have a lot of options.
The Angels are able to start over.
Though it is the least likely to occur, this is probably the choice that Angels supporters favour the most. One man, Arte Moreno, is the cause of this. Even after losing Ohtani, the Angels have never fully recovered under Moreno, and it doesn’t seem like something he would be interested in.
But even if Ohtani were to leave the Angels and Moreno had a change of heart, this team could still be largely rebuilt.
Players like Carlos Estevez and Brandon Drury, whose contracts are about to expire, instantly become trade bait and fit on a tonne of rosters looking to contend. To further strengthen their already woefully inadequate farm system, the Angels may even think about dealing players who have a little bit more control.
Players with team control, such as Patrick Sandoval and Gryphon Canning, would become desirable trade targets and command high prices if this were to occur.
Trading Mike Trout would also be a possible part of a rebuild. Even though it would be challenging to pull off, that might be the moment he puts pressure on the group to send him somewhere else. If this improbable event occurs, everything is on the table.
