This would be a massive splash.
The Los Angeles Angels are reportedly “very interested” in signing two-time Cy Young award winner and free agent pitcher Blake Snell this offseason. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported the news.
The Angels have made it clear that they’re not entering a rebuild, and they want to win next season whether Shohei Ohtani returns or not.
The hiring of Ron Washington affirmed that sentiment, as he’s 71 years old and has no desire to enter a rebuild.
The Angels want to win, and they want to win in 2024 — and this report from Feinsand only confirms that.
Snell is one of the top starting pitchers on the market, and arguably the most sure thing since Yoshinobu Yamamoto hasn’t yet pitched in the MLB.
While Yamamoto has the most potential — especially being just 25 years old — Snell is a two-time Cy Young award winner, and coming off a year in which he was virtually unhittable./
Snell had an MLB-leading 2.25 ERA with 234 strikeouts for the Padres in 2023, en route to winning his second Cy Young award.
He had one of the best seasons of his career just in time for his free agency, where he’s sure to make a ton of money on the open market.
The Angels are in a state of flux right now, as they await the verdict on Ohtani. However, they clearly want to win, and Snell would be a huge signing to get them on the right path.
The Angels starting rotation struggled in 2023 outside of Ohtani, and having Snell anchor the rotation for the foreseeable future would be exactly what this team needs.
Realistic or not, it’s nice to see the Angels focused on adding big names this offseason and truly trying to win in 2024.
