With Shohei Ohtani’s free agency drawing most of the attention, the Los Angeles Angels are making it clear they’re holding onto superstar Mike Trout this offseason.
Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian has made it very clear where his team currently stands on the topic of franchise centerpiece Mike Trout.
“Mike Trout is not getting traded,” Minasian said. “100 percent.”
By making that statement that to the media at the Winter Meetings in Nashville on Tuesday, Minasian put to bed any rumors that Los Angeles would be moving on from Trout, who has another seven years and $260 million left on his contract.
Rumors around a potential Trout trade have been limited, but they have continued to linger as Shohei Ohtani’s free agency progresses. While the Angels are still reportedly being considered by the two-way superstar, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays appear to be in the driver’s seat in the Ohtani sweepstakes.
With a two-time MVP in Ohtani potentially on his way out the door, and the Angels already having missed the last nine postseasons, the team likely won’t be in a great spot in 2024, even with Trout anchoring their lineup.
Trout saw his numbers dip to career lows in 2023, and a handful of injuries ultimately limited him to just 82 appearances. Over the last four seasons, Trout has played in a total of 290 games for the Angels.
Still, the future Hall of Fame outfielder has made the last 11 All-Star Games. He has three MVPs and four second-place finishes under his belt, and he is only 32 years old.
For his career, Trout is a .301 hitter with 1,624 hits, 368 home runs, 940 RBI and a .994 OPS. The New Jersey native leads all active players with an 85.2 career WAR.
Should Ohtani leave, the Angels appear content to rebuild around Trout, as they had been doing before the Japanese superstar arrived in 2018.
