R169 road temporary closed as man dies and others injured in horror crash

A young man has died and two people are in hospital after a horror crash in  Louth this afternoon.

Emergency services responded to the two-vehicle collision on the R169 in Collon shortly after noon.

The driver and sole occupant of one car, a man aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the second car, a man aged in his 60s and a woman aged in her 70s, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for assessment.

Gardai have closed the road for a forensic collision investigation and diversions are in place.

The coroner has been notified and a post mortem exam will be arranged.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Ardee are appealing for witnesses following a fatal traffic collision in Collon, Co Louth on Monday, March 4, 2024.

“Shortly after 12 noon, Gardaí and emergency services responded to a two-car collision on the R169 in Collon. The driver and sole occupant of one of the cars, a male in his 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The occupants of the second car, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s, were transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for assessment.

“Diversions are in place while the road at the location is closed for investigation by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled, and the local coroner has been alerted.

The gardaí are asking those who have dashcam or other video footage from that time to provide it to them, in addition to pleading for witnesses to come forward.
