Luton manager Rob Edwards watched his side fall to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Man United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
Luton Town manager Rob Edwards suggested his side would have been within their rights to leave Old Trafford with something to show for their efforts following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
United center-back Victor Lindelof, who was recalled to the starting line-up in place of the injured Jonny Evans, lashed home the only goal of the game just before the hour mark. The ball broke kindly to the Swede inside the penalty area after Luton failed to fully clear a corner.
Marcus Rashford’s low cross into the six-yard box was cleared only as far as the center-back and he finished with aplomb to score his first goal for the club in almost three years. The Reds had spurned a whole host of chances prior to Lindelof’s effort, meaning it was nothing more than they deserved.
Luton refused to give up after falling behind, creating a cluster of chances of their own. Edwards believes his players could be proud of their efforts, but admitted United dominated parts of the match.
Edwards, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I’m disappointed we have not got anything from the game. I thought it was pleasing to get in at half-time 0-0.
“They [United] had clearly dominated possession, we had a couple of hairy moments, we had one really good moment ourselves with Carlton’s header and a few set-pieces as well. It was just key to be in the game.
“In the second half, I just was delighted with how the players played. We were brave with the ball. We have almost taken half the ball here at Old Trafford, which for us, it shows we are really growing and improving as a football club.
“It was just harder for us in the second half to break them down and find a way to create a big chance.”
On requiring just that little bit more luck, Edwards continued: “It was disappointing how we conceded the goal. Again, it was a second phase of a set-piece that had broken kindly to him [Lindelof] and it is those chaotic moments where we have got to be slightly better in the box.
“It was disappointing how we conceded, but there were some chances in the second half. With a little bit more luck, we could have had the same kind of fortune. But we didn’t and that is slightly frustrating.”
