While striker Carlton Morris was happy to make history on Saturday, becoming the first Luton player to score in double figures in the top division in more than 30 years, his primary concern is still making sure the Hatters survive in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old had reached his personal milestone in the final moments at Molineux after Cauley Woodrow volleyed back to him after Alfie Doughty’s corner kick. Since scoring the game’s late winner against AFC Bournemouth, he has scored nine goals. A home defender played the wingback onside, and he proceeded along the byline before sending over a cross that Reece Burke headed down, whereupon Morris skillfully volleyed past Jose Sa to put his team back in the game.
They failed to score again, losing for the tenth time in their previous thirteen games. Nevertheless, Morris, who became the first Hatter to score ten goals in the top flight in a campaign since Mick Harford in 1991–1992, said, “It’s an achievement I’m proud of for myself, but the focus in mind is getting the points on the board at the moment.” There are three crucial games remaining, and we need to attempt to win them all, so I’m not too concerned about it right now.
With just three goals in his first 19 games this season, the current Town captain had a difficult time scoring, and as a result, Elijah Adebayo replaced him for the 4-3 home loss against Arsenal. Though he was back in the starting lineup for the 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, he continued to be a consistent substitute in the remaining six games.
Morris, the only outfield player to have appeared in every one of Luton’s 35 Premier League games, has been a terrific line leader in Adebayo’s absence. He has scored seven goals in his past 16 games, including crucial goals against Burnley and Bournemouth.
He has also received a lot of praise from manager Rob Edwards, who stated: “For a striker to get double figures for a newly-promoted team, and he’s got a good number of assists as well, he’s having a cracking season.” The forward became the 12th player in the club’s history to make it to 10 in the top division of English football. I’m hoping he can pick up a couple more in the upcoming games.
