At approximately 9 p.m. on October 10, when over 1,700 automobiles were in Terminal Car Park 2, the fire broke out. When the fire reached its peak, almost 100 firefighters battled it, and all aircraft were grounded until the next day. Up to 1,500 cars are estimated to have been destroyed in the incident
This information was released after an investigation into the fire revealed that a diesel car unintentionally caused the fire. According to the report from the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, “all evidence points to the most probable cause being an electrical fault or component failure, which started in the vehicle’s engine bay while it was in motion as a result of the investigation.”
The police said last month that there would be no more action taken against a man who had been initially detained in relation to the incident. In September, the fire service is anticipated to provide a detailed report.
