On Sunday afternoon, a trailer being towed by a car on the M5 crashed, spilling its load of white goods and refrigerator freezers across the road. It occurred on the northbound carriageway at approximately 3:15 p.m.
As emergency personnel and law enforcement arrived, all three lanes of the road were blocked. Police warned drivers to avoid the area or expect delays after they heard reports of long lines for drivers.
Gloucestershire Police stated: “On Sunday at 3:18 p.m., we received a call. A car that was pulling a caravan jackknifed. Because of the obstruction on the road, all three lanes are closed. No injuries have occurred.”
An overturned trailer still fastened to a car is visible in pictures taken at the scene. Fridges and other electrical white goods were left scattered across the road. It looks like metal cabinets and work surfaces make up the remaining debris.
The accident happened between J11A A417 (Gloucester/Cirencester) to J11 A40 (Gloucester/Golden Valley Bypass).
At 4:30 p.m., Inrix reported: ‘Three lanes were closed and there was queuing traffic on the M5 Northbound from J11A A417 (Gloucester / Cirencester) to J11 A40 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass) due to an overturned caravan and debris on the road’.
“Ubers are using the hard shoulder to pass. The highways are presently closing all three live lanes to facilitate both recovery efforts and the removal of debris from the scene.”
Drivers on the M5 this afternoon are advised by National Highways to allow extra time for their journey.
