Three dead after multiple-vehicle collision on M5

Two men died at scene of Gloucestershire crash, which involved five vehicles, and one of the two seriously injured died the next day

A accident on the M5 motorway has left one man critically injured and three persons dead.

The incident began early on Wednesday morning when a Ford Mondeo and an MG Rover collided, according to police investigators, and involved five vehicles in total.

After then, an HGV came to a stop and collided once more with a silver Mercedes and a black Mazda. In the Mercedes were four men from Gloucester who were among the dead and critically injured.

Both the driver, 24, and the passenger, 23, passed away at the site. In critical condition, a 23-year-old passenger was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. On Thursday, he passed away.

The final passenger, another 23-year-old, remains in a critical condition in Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

A man who was a passenger in the Mazda and the driver of the Mondeo were taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Both are believed to have suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.

The incident happened between junctions 8 and 9 southbound of the motorway, about half a mile south of the M50 junction. A spokesman for Gloucestershire police confirmed the motorway, which was closed for investigations to take place, has now reopened.

The constabulary said none of the other people involved were believed to be seriously injured.

The force spokesman said the male driver of the MG Rover left the scene of the collision before police arrived, and appealed for him to come forward.
