May 16, George Town — Even as images of the receipt are being circulated on social media, police are looking into a case of religious provocation resulting from comments made on a receipt at a pizza restaurant in Bayan Lepas, Penang, which are thought to be offensive to Islam.
In a statement released today, he stated, “Our investigations revealed that remarks in an order placed through Domino’s online order application at approximately 3:03 PM on May 15 contained offensive language against Islam.”
According to him, authorities are looking into the case in accordance with Section 298 of the Penal Code for intentionally hurting someone’s religious sentiments.
If found guilty, the maximum penalty under this clause is one year in prison, a fine, or both.
Kamarul cautioned the people against speculating on the matter as it may lead to discord and instability.
Assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz of Bayan Lepas has also been to the location where the receipt was issued because it is inside his district.
He wrote on his Facebook page today, “I went to the Teluk Kumbar police station and obtained an explanation from the outlet supervisor and the outlet’s northern region manager Mohd Shukri Salem was also present.”
According to him, a lot of people were perplexed as to how the comments ended up on the receipt and believed the cashier might have typed them in.
Azrul claimed to have been informed that the customer had put the controversial remarks in the remark section of an online order, and that they would show up automatically on the receipt.
“I hope the person behind this is arrested, and the management of Domino’s has also filed a police report,” he stated.
He pleaded for composure and advised against reacting angrily to the provocation.
“Leave this to the authorities to sort out,” he continued.
