Manager Nigel Clough is adamant that Mansfield Town’s chances of earning automatic promotion from League Two are not dependent on their matchup with MK Dons this Saturday.
With their 1-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday, the Stags are once again in the top three, surpassing Milton Keynes.
Mansfield, who lead Mike Williamson’s team by two points and a single position, have a match against the Dons coming up.
“We still have control over it, regardless of what occurs on Saturday,” Clough stated to BBC Radio Nottingham.
“Either way, we’ll exert every effort to achieve a favourable outcome. The most important thing is that it’s still in our hands even if we don’t.
“We are more than capable of winning our last three games if things go against us on Saturday.”
Mansfield could be headed for promotion if they defeat MK Dons on Saturday and go on to win their remaining match against Accrington on Tuesday.
Before Crawley handed the Stags a crushing defeat over the weekend to prolong their winless streak to three games, the team looked well-positioned for a return to the third tier for the first time in 21 years.
Clough praised his team’s mentality after they defeated Forest Green, the bottom team, to bounce back.
“I thought we played some brilliant stuff in the first half and were back to how we were a few weeks ago which, when you are in the midst of a poor run, takes some character to do,” he stated.
“We just have to show the same sort of drive and intensity in the last four games.”
