Marco Tilio disclosed that his aspirations of leaving his mark at Celtic this year were crushed by an injury. After a lacklustre stay with the Hoops, whom he joined in June for £1.5 million, he returned to Melbourne City on loan.
The 22-year-old thinks that his lack of confidence in Brendan Rodgers was caused by an injury he had prior to agreeing to a five-year contract with Celtic. “I went away with the Australia Under 23s and got injured,” he clarified. At that point, I believed the injury would last a week. After I signed the contract with Celtic, I was obviously injured and missed three months of work.
Tilio said that it was difficult to break into the Celtic team since they were up against eight or nine other wingers who were on par, if not better. “It doesn’t help, and you’re competing with eight or nine other wingers who are just as good as you, if not better,” he stated. “I was always playing catch-up, and it was going to be a difficult road trying to get into that Celtic team.” Still, I thought I was ready to get out of Australia. After serving my time here, I felt that I had performed admirably, and after the entire build-up, I was certain that I was prepared to travel there.”
He acknowledged that it’s difficult to anticipate football results. He recognised the talent of the players at Celtic, even though he thought he had equaled their speed and should have been given an opportunity to play.
“Well, it was a difficult half-year for my football, but I’m always learning, and we’ll see what transpires in the future,” he said in closing.
“But no, I don’t think I left Australia too early. Now it’s an important six months for me. I want to help Australia qualify for another Olympics, and for myself, if I can get myself to another Olympic Games it’d be pretty special, so that played a big factor in my return.”
