Today is the NFL trading deadline. Is there anything the Miami Dolphins can do? This is where we keep track of everything during the day.
Today is the trading deadline. Every year, trades have to be finished by 4 p.m. ET on the Tuesday after Week 8; since Halloween occurs on that Tuesday this year, we have until this afternoon to finalize any deals. Over the past two years, the Miami Dolphins have been active at the deadline. Last year, they acquired running back Jeff Wilson from the San Francisco 49ers and linebacker Bradley Chubb from the Denver Broncos.
In 2023, how will the Dolphins perform? General manager Chris Grier is not receiving any demands from head coach Mike McDaniel. When questioned last week if the team’s injuries this year have affected his planning in advance of the deadline, the coach responded. “I’m very, very comfortable with everybody on the roster,” he responded, “I think to the credit of, first and foremost, the actual players that we have on the roster, and then to our personnel department led by Chris Grier.” We were discussing how much depth we have back in August, and we’ve continued to progress as a football team so we’re fortunate that we have high-quality players across the board in terms of depth at positions. So I’m not really looking for anything at all. And who knows what Chris (Grier) is doing, but he hasn’t come knocking on my door or in my office about anything. He’ll always be doing his job, but I’m very happy with the roster that we have, even with the slight adversity that we’ve been facing.”
Throughout the day, we will keep up with all the rumors and news as we approach this afternoon’s deadline. If there is any speculation the Dolphins could be involved in a trade, we will post it here and provide an immediate reaction to the potential move. We will also update any finalized trades if they happen.
Rumors and news on the Dolphins trade
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Dolphins have “poked around at running back” as the trade deadline draws near. This seems to be a carryover from the offseason rumors that Miami was looking at every running back on the market. The league’s best rushing offense belongs to the Dolphins. They may look at a depth option if they don’t think rookie running back De’Von Achane will return when he is eligible to come off injured reserve, but for the time being, the team appears content with Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Jr., and Salvon Ahmed as the team’s runners.
10/6 – The Dolphins acquired a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round selection.
Notable trades around the NFL that impact the Dolphins
- The Buffalo Bills acquired defensive back Rasul Douglas from the Green Bay Packers. In seven games played this year, Douglas has 32 tackles, six passes defensed, and an interception; along with playing 100 percent of the defensive snaps this year, Douglas has appeared in 41 percent of the Packers’ special teams snaps. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bills sent a 2024 third-round pick to the Packers in exchange for Douglas and a 2024 fifth-round pick. The Dolphins lost to the Bills in part one of the annual home-and-home series between the AFC East rivals. Buffalo is a game behind the Dolphins in the standings, but hold that head-to-head tiebreak should Miami stumble. The Dolphins and Bills do not play again until Week 18, with Douglas having plenty of time to adjust to his new team by then.
- The Washington Commanders continued a busy trade deadline with their second move to trade away a defensive end. The team has dealt Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick. Following the Sweat deal (below), the Commanders are in sell mode under their new ownership. Miami is scheduled to play Washington in Week 13.
- The Washington Commanders traded defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick. Rumors had swirled for a while that the Commanders could be looking to move on from Sweat, their 2019 first-round pick who was in the final year of his contract. The trade is expected to include a new contract for Sweat. The Dolphins face the Commanders in Week 13.
- Tennessee Titans traded safety Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for safety Terrell Edmunds and 2024 second- and fifth-round draft picks; Miami hosts the Titans in Week 14
