Alan Shearer issues a clear verdict on Middlesbrough supporters:

Alan Shearer has spoken about Middlesbrough’s supporters after the 1-0 win over Chelsea in midweek

Middlesbrough’s supporters have seen the highs and lows of football in recent years but were treated to a night to remember by Michael Carrick and his players against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Despite a return to the Premier League being the main ambition of all connected with the Riverside Stadium outfit, in recent years, Boro have been the subject of some astonishing results in cup competitions.

Having seen off the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur on a run to the FA Cup quarter-final two seasons ago before a defeat to Chelsea, Carrick’s men are looking to exact revenge on the West Londoners in this season’s EFL Cup semi-final, which they are currently halfway to doing so thanks to Hayden Hackney’s 37th-minute strike in the first leg.

Middlesbrough FC (EFL Cup results 23/24) – As of January 10th 2024 Result

Second Round – Bolton Wanderers (A) 1-3
Third Round – Bradford City (A) 0-2

Semi-Final (Leg 1) – Chelsea (H) 1-0

Newcastle United legend heaps praise on Middlesbrough supporters

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast alongside fellow ex-England ace Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, the former Newcastle United striker and Premier League record goalscorer, Alan Shearer wasn’t short of praise for Carrick’s men after their performance against Mauricio Pochettino’s side just days after a narrow defeat to second-place Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

“I watched both games against Villa and Chelsea. I thought they were brilliant, they had a couple of more injuries (Bangura and Latte Lath) as well in the first twenty five minutes of the game,” Shearer began. “To lose another two players again to injury and to get over that and stick in there.”

He continued: “It was a great atmosphere at the Riverside, it sounded as if it was rocking there!”

“The result didn’t surprise me, because you haven’t got a clue what Chelsea side are going to turn up – it’s just unbelievable!”

Alan Shearer issues verdict ahead of Middlesbrough’s trip to Stamford Bridge

With Carrick deploying similar tactics in the last two cup outings, Shearer wouldn’t be surprised to see the exact same scenarios pan out when the return leg comes to the fore on January 23rd at Stamford Bridge.

“I know they (Chelsea) missed some great chances through Cole Palmer, but in all honesty, I wasn’t surprised with the outcome, which I think says it all” he continued.

“I haven’t got a clue what’s going to happen in the second leg. It wouldn’t surprise me if Middlesbrough went there and frustrated them, got the result and got back to Wembley.

“It’s been twenty years since the last time (Middlesbrough winning the League Cup), I heard the other day. But it was great for Michael Carrick and his team to put in that performance and get the result they wanted.” Shearer concluded.

Lineker issued his own verdict on the upcoming second leg’s potential differing circumstances, regardless of Middlesbrough’s robust performance on Teesside.

Middlesbrough’s chances of reaching the EFL Cup Final

Middlesbrough’s defensive performance in particular will give them a great deal of confidence heading into the second leg, but there’s no doubt that the onus is even further on Chelsea as pressure mounts on Pochettino.

As Shearer mentions, the chance to replicate their success against Bolton Wanderers in Cardiff back in 2004 will make for a great storyline, but they mustn’t let such narratives deter their focus.

If Middlesbrough are successful in the second leg, then they will become the first Championship side to reach the showpiece occasion since Cardiff City in 2011/12, when the Bluebirds were defeated on penalties by Liverpool.

That highlights the size of the task facing them and they have to head to Stamford Bridge with 100% focus.
