On Friday, a fan’s jail sentence was overturned for hitting Melbourne City keeper Tom Glover in the face with a metal bucket during a pitch invasion last year.
In August, Alex Agelopoulos received a sentence of three months in jail and a community corrections order for the incident that occurred during an A-League match in December of previous year.
Glover was hit in the face by the bucket during the Victory fans’ storming of the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium pitch on December 17, 2022, and was left covered in blood. Glover was later reported by City to have had multiple stitches due to what seemed to be a concussion.
Glover, the referee Alex King, and the camera operator who also suffered injuries received an apology from Victory.
Agelopoulos challenged his sentence in Victorian County Court, claiming it was unjust that he was the only one imprisoned for pitch invasions.
After the 24-year-old’s jail sentence was revoked, the judge imposed a three-and-a-half-year community corrections order that included 350 hours of unpaid labour.
Agelopoulos is still prohibited from going to any football games for a period of five years.
