Middlesbrough told what they are lacking as top six hopes assessed*

As things stand, Middlesbrough is still in the running for a spot in the Championship play-offs.

Right now, Michael Carrick’s team is ranked tenth on the second division rankings. They have eight games left in their regular season and are now seven points outside of the top six.

They therefore still stand a chance of making it into the play-offs and earning a chance to advance.

Given the performance of the clubs above them, Middlesbrough will undoubtedly need to be nearly flawless in the last stretch if they hope to accomplish that.

However, it seems that some observers do not think that belief possesses the necessary quality to accomplish it.

‘Boro had a significant makeover last summer. Twelve new players in all were added to Michael Carrick’s starting lineup.

In the meantime, a great deal of people would leave The Riverside Stadium. Graeme Bailey now feels that the people hired for the club are not qualified for the tasks for which they were hired.

He also believes that one of the club’s biggest issues is the absence of goals. In response to boro.news’ question about whether he believes Middlesbrough can make it to the playoffs this season, the journalist said:

Though I don’t think they are talented enough for the top six, there’s always a chance. Really, Middlesbrough doesn’t score enough goals. I believe that the summer transfer window was really weak, as I have stated before. In certain ways, the squad took a significant step backward.

When ‘Boro returns from the international break, they will play Southampton on Friday afternoon at St Mary’s.

So far this season, they have scored just 53 goals in 38 league games so. Only one team in the Championship’s top ten has found the net less frequently.

Indeed, Chuba Akpom’s contributions from last season have been a big miss, and they have not been able to find a consistent goalscorer to replace him this time round.

That in turn, has made it much harder for them to pick up the results they need consistently, to break into the play-off places.

Meanwhile, the fact they have been unable to find a replacement for Akpom, highlights just one of the areas where they appear not to have been good enough in the market.

Even some of their recent wins, such as the one at Birmingham City, have arguably not been as convincing as they should have been.

With that in mind, even if Middlesbrough did somehow break into the top six, it is hard to imagine them then being able to produce the performances needed to win promotion once they got there.
