Ahmed Alid denies murdering Terence Carney, attempted murder and two counts of assaulting detectives after he was arrested
The panic button in the police station did not work when a Moroccan asylum seeker fought with two female detectives who were questioning him about the death of an elderly person on the street, a court heard.
Ahmed Alid, 45, was heard yelling and screaming in Arabic during the October 16 incident at the Middlesbrough Police Station. He was reportedly heard exclaiming “Allahu Akbar,” according to Teesside Crown Court. In his witness testimony, a detective said that during questioning over the death of 70-year-old Hartlepool man Terence Carney and the attempted murder of flatmate Javed Nouri, he had became “agitated” with his interpreter.

She said in a statement that she learned DC Stevenson had pressed a panic button, but it was ineffective. In order to get assistance, the defendant’s attorney called 999 from the interview room. The court heard that Alid had barred the door to prevent police colleagues who were watching the interview elsewhere from breaking in.
The jury was informed that after Alid gave DC Harvey a bear hug and DC Stevenson tried to assist her, all three of them ended up on the ground and the two cops claimed to have been beaten.
