Being able to use Isaiah Jones against Sheffield Wednesday thrilled Michael Carrick.
After Isaiah Jones overcame a scare to start for Middlesbrough against Sheffield Wednesday, Michael Carrick was thrilled to see him make a crucial impact.
Jones was questionable for Easter Monday’s match due to his late exit from Friday’s draw with Southampton. With just nine minutes remaining in that match, the only recently returned winger hobbled off following a challenge late in the game, raising concerns that he might not be ready for Sheffield Wednesday.
However, it proved to be nothing more than a cramp for Jones, who proceeded to score Boro’s second goal and continued to pose a threat, helping Boro secure a crucial victory that kept them just six points outside of the top six. After learning of the injuries, Boro, who had already lost ten players for the match, felt relieved. However, caution was exercised as the game came to a close and the points were secured.
“Izzy had a little cramp at Southampton, but he was fine for today,” Carrick stated. Is he asserting his goal? But really, I’m happy for him. All the while, he posed a threat. He was disappointed not to take advantage of his good opportunity in the first half.
“However, what really mattered was that, as on Friday, he provided us with that spark and that threat. Because of the explosive nature of both Manu and him as players, we had to take them off towards the end.
With six games left, Boro is now six points outside of the play-off spots following their victory over Sheffield Wednesday. When Swansea City visits the Riverside on Saturday, they hope to be strengthened by the return of Alex Bangura, Hayden Hackney, and Rav van den Berg in addition to having Jones available. Bangura has already returned to training, but considering how long he was away, Carrick is being cautious.
