Middlesbrough in discussions to sign Barcelona wonderkid

In the January transfer window, Sunderland should compete with Middlesbrough to recruit a former Barcelona sensation.

Sunderland has had a strong season thus far, but the past few weeks have somewhat altered Regis Le Bris’ team’s outlook.

Due to specific problems, the Black Cats have not won in six games since their loss to Sheffield United on Friday.

Especially in Romaine Mundle’s absence through injury, there has been a shortage of goals from the wing positions.

Although they will have fierce competition, Sunderland AFC News examines one player who might be able to resolve this issue.

Louie Barry, who is on loan at Stockport County from Aston Villa, has been playing brilliantly this season, netting 13 goals in 17 League One contests.

The former Barcelona player has excelled for the Hatters despite never truly living up to expectations during his previous loan stints at Swindon Town, MK Dons, and Salford.

In order to put the 21-year-old through a more difficult test, Villa has chosen to recall him in January and send him to the Championship.

Birmingham World has reported that Middlesbrough are one of the teams interested in Barry’s services, while there have been no links to Sunderland. But Le Bris’ side should definitely consider a move for the winger, even though they would probably rather have a left-footed option. Barry likes to cut inside onto his stronger right foot, like Mundle and Tom Watson, but one of those could surely still perform on the opposite flank.

Since Amad Diallo is one of Sunderland’s greatest loans ever, it will be difficult for any subsequent agreements to have the same effect.
Having played in Barcelona’s junior system, Barry is obviously a very good player who has apparently settled comfortably at the senior level.

He intends to join Unai Emery’s team for the upcoming campaign, and a successful Championship loan stint would help him get there.

Even if he doesn’t score many goals, the Villa player would nonetheless delight the spectators when he arrived at the Stadium of Light in excellent form.

Because of Romaine Mundle’s injury, the Black Cats currently appear to have few attacking options.
Tommy Watson, who was one of Sunderland’s bright spots in the close 1-0 loss on the road against Sheffield United, will be permanently introduced as a result of the 21-year-old winger’s absence. Watson has already scored four goals in the 2024–25 Championship season.

Regis Le Bris, the manager of Sunderland, would be glad that Watson lived up to the hype because his team’s attacking options up top would be severely diminished if he were to be replaced.

After his recent performance with the U21s, Abdoullah Ba is one Black Cats player who is most definitely not in the running for a first-team position.
