Andy Myers leaves Chelsea technical coaching role to join Joe Edwards at Millwall

Chelsea announced the resignation of longtime Academy coach and former player Andy Myers prior to last night’s match. Myers has joined newly appointed Millwall assistant Joe Edwards, another former Chelsea player.

Edwards, who is still only 37 years old, has never held a head coaching position in senior football. We last saw him supporting Frank Lampard during their disastrous caretaker stint at the Bridge in the second half of the previous campaign. Edwards had previously worked with Lampard at Everton (and, of course, Chelsea) and was a member of Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff during our Champions League-winning campaign. However, prior to all of that, Edwards had also enjoyed great success as the head coach of the Chelsea Academy, where Myers supported him.

Myers also had spells in charge of our U18, U19, and U23 sides — winning our, so far only, PL2 title in 2019-20 — before transitioning to a “loan technical coaching” role after the 2021-22 season (with Mark Robinson coming in from Wimbledon to take over the U23s).

Thus, Myers and Edwards are now back together in London, where they intend to improve Millwall’s situation. With only two victories in their previous eleven games, they are currently ranked eighteenth in the Championship. After four years in charge, head coach Gary Rowett was fired by Millwall a few weeks ago.

Joe and Andy, good luck!

“It’s a really proud day for me.”
