Former Millwall midfielder challenge fans attitude over Gary Rowett sacking”

Jobi McAnuff has criticised Millwall over the departure of manager Gary Rowett.

The former midfielder has also questioned the attitude of some of the club’s fans towards the 49-year-old during his time.

Rowett left Millwall on Wednesday night, after just under four years in charge of the Championship club.

Given how the team has performed under Gary Rowett’s direction, Millwall’s decision to fire him seems odd.

Jobi McAnuff, who has previously criticised some club supporters for their criticism of Rowett while he was in charge at The Den, says as much.

What was Rowett’s record at Millwall?
The appointment of Rowett as Millwall manager came about in October 2019, after Neil Harris left the team.

After Rowett took over, the Lions consistently finished in the top half of the Championship table at the end of the season, despite not making the playoffs in his first three seasons as manager.

Last season, it seemed like that was going to change, but Millwall lost 4-3 at home against Blackburn Rovers on the last day of the season after blowing a 3-1 lead, meaning they had to settle for eighth place, one point outside the top six.

Following a dismal start to the current season, it was then verified on Wednesday night that the manager and the team have decided to split ways, with Adam Barrett taking temporary leadership of the first team.

It appears that McAnuff thinks the club should have made a different choice in this matter.

What has McAnuff stated regarding Rowett being fired by Millwall?

Considering the outcomes that Rowett has brought to Millwall, McAnuff seems to believe that the club made a somewhat harsh decision in letting the 49-year-old go.

Even though Rowett made a significant influence at The Den, the Millwall supporters vocally booed him during several games; the former midfielder for Crystal Palace and Reading has also voiced dissatisfaction of this.

“I’ve got to say I think it’s another, in my opinion, ridiculous decision,” McAnuff remarked in response to Rowett’s exit from Millwall on BBC Radio 5Live Sport. It is clearly silly season when it comes to managers losing their jobs right now.

Yes, it’s quite simple to glance at the league table and see their current standing, but Millwall Football Club feels that, considering their performance over the last few seasons and their time generally under Gary Rowett, where he has made improvements and really been striving for that play-off squad, that’s not where they should be.
